How to Prepare for Your First Sugaring Session

Everything you need to know before arriving at Maison Lumia for the first time — from hair length and skin preparation to what to wear and what to expect.

Your first sugaring session is a different experience from what most people expect. If you have waxed before, you will notice key differences immediately — in the texture of the paste, the direction of application, and the feeling on your skin. If this is your first hair removal appointment of any kind, you are approaching it fresh, and that is a real advantage. For a full account of what takes place during the appointment itself, see the anatomy of a sugaring session.

Here is what to know before you arrive.

Hair Length Matters More Than You Think

Sugaring paste grips the hair at the root, which means there needs to be enough hair above the surface to catch. Too short, and the paste cannot grip. Too long, and the session takes longer and can feel more uncomfortable. A dedicated guide on how long hair should be before sugaring explains the reasoning in detail.

The optimal length is between 2 and 5 millimetres. For most people:

If you are unsure, resist the urge to trim before arriving. We can always assess and advise when you come in.

Exfoliate the Night Before

A light exfoliation 24 hours before your session helps remove the dead skin buildup that can trap hairs and make removal harder. Use a gentle scrub or a soft cloth — nothing aggressive.

Do not exfoliate on the day of your appointment. Freshly exfoliated skin can be more sensitive, and you want your skin barrier intact when you arrive.

Avoid Lotions on the Day

Moisturisers, body oils, and self-tan products create a surface barrier. This reduces how well the sugaring paste adheres and can make the session less effective.

Arrive with clean, product-free skin on the areas to be treated. A light shower before your appointment is ideal — just skip the body lotion afterward.

What to Wear

Loose, comfortable clothing is best, particularly for leg and bikini treatments. Tight clothing after a session can cause friction on freshly treated skin — see why wearing loose clothing after sugaring matters for more on this. The American Academy of Dermatology also notes that avoiding friction on sensitised skin supports faster recovery.

What to Expect During the Session

We start every first visit with a short consultation. We ask about your skin history, any sensitivities, and what you use in your current routine. This helps us choose the right paste and technique.

The session involves:

Sugaring does not use strips or pre-applied wax. The paste is water-soluble and rinses completely clean — from your skin and from clothing.

Discomfort Is Normal — but It Passes

If this is your first time removing hair from an area, expect some discomfort. It is not pain the way most people anticipate — it is closer to a sharp flick that fades within seconds.

With regular sessions, the hair follicle weakens progressively. Most clients find that their third and fourth sessions feel significantly easier than the first. This process is explained in detail in how regular sugaring leads to finer hair.

We never rush a session. If you need a moment between passes, just say so. Your comfort is part of the treatment.
